A memory from 9/11
LT. HEATHER LUCKY PENNY who was stationed at Andrews AFB on 9-11-2001.
She received orders to take down United Flight 93 with her F-16 which had no missiles or live ammo.
Her quote "I would essentially be a kamikaze pilot". Her and Col Marc Sasseville took off; him going for cockpit.. her for the tail.
However.. because of the heroic actions of passengers.. Flt 93 went down in a PA field.
Today, when asked why she was willing to fly a kamikaze mission she didn't hesitate. “Why? Because there are things in this world more important than oneself".....and she goes on to name them:
“Freedom. The Constitution of the United States. Our way of life. Mom, baseball, apple pie; these things and so many more that make us uniquely American. We belong to something greater than ourselves. As complex and diverse and discordant as it is, this thing, this idea called America, binds us together in citizenship and community and brotherhood."
