The head of each sunflower is made from smaller flowers. The petals we see outside cannot reproduce. But the florets on the disc in the middle, where the seeds develop, have male and female sex organs, and each produces a seed. They can self-pollinate or pick up pollen blown by the wind or carried by insects.
