#OnThisDay, May 11, 1888, Composer Irving Berlin born in Temun, Russia. Though Irving Berlin was born in Russia, he composed “God Bless America,” one of the nation’s most beloved patriotic ballads. Though he was Jewish, he composed iconic songs such as “White Christmas” and “In Your Easter Bonnet”—both inspired by the biggest Christian holidays. Berlin died in 1989 at the age of 101, a full 78 years after his first hit song, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band.”
