We went to Venezuela in late 1999 to look at our boat. We couldn’t believe what we saw. Housing developments were abandoned, and beautiful resorts with few vacationers. When Caldera and then Hugo Chavez took over the country, because of the oil it provided, it was one of the wealthiest countries in South America. The economy was booming and unemployment was almost non existent. Caldera introduced and then Chavez put the final nail in their coffin when they socialized everything and turned the country into the disaster we see today.
