View MoreIncline your ear, O Lord, and hear my prayer Psalm 86:1-4 (ESV) 1 Incline your ear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. 2 Preserve my life, for I am godly; save your servant, who trusts in you — you are my God. 3 Be gracious to me, O LORD, for to you do I cry all the day. 4 Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O LORD, do I lift up my soul. ----- ----- Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear my prayer! To you, O Lord, do I lift up my hands, and my heart, and my soul! Be gracious to me, O Lord, in you I trust all the day long! For you, O Lord, are a great, and a mighty, and an awesome God! Please, O Lord, incline your ear, and answer me, when my heart cries out to you! In today’s verses David is lifting up his hands in worship, crying out to the Lord to preserve his life when ruthless wicked men have risen up against him, trying to destroy his freedom and his life. David’s plight, and his actions, as a man after God’s own heart, desiring to do His will along every step of his life’s path, is a clear example for you, and for me, and for everyone who follows in the footsteps of Jesus Christ in this fallen wicked world. David was willing to commit his spirit into the Lord’s hands every minute of every day, even though he stumbled and sinned from time to time, and then repented from a broken and a grieving heart. In Psalm 31 we can clearly see David’s heart and mind at a time of affliction and distress. In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me! Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me! (Psalm 31:1-2). For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me; you take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge. Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God. (Psalm 31:3-5). I hate those who pay regard to worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD. I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have known the distress of my soul, and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place. (Psalm 31:6-8). Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eye is wasted from grief; my soul and my body also. For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away. (Psalm 31:9-10). Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach, especially to my neighbors, and an object of dread to my acquaintances; those who see me in the street flee from me. I have been forgotten like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel. For I hear the whispering of many — terror on every side! — as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life. (Psalm 31:11-13). But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors! Make your face shine on your servant; save me in your steadfast love! O LORD, let me not be put to shame, for I call upon you; let the wicked be put to shame; let them go silently to Sheol. Let the lying lips be mute, which speak insolently against the righteous in pride and contempt. (Psalm 31:14-18). Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind! In the cover of your presence you hide them from the plots of men [and women]; you store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues. (Psalm 31:19-20). Blessed be the LORD, for He has wondrously shown His steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city. I had said in my alarm, “I am cut off from your sight.” But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help. (Psalm 31:21-22). Love the LORD, all you His saints! The LORD preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride. Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD! (Psalm 31:23-24). Blessed be the Lord, for He shows His steadfast love to you every day! He answers you when you cry for help! And He preserves your life! Let your heart take courage! Wait for the Lord! Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear my prayer! And lead me in your righteousness! Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. (Psalm 5:1-3). For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man [or woman]. (Psalm 5:4-6). But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you. Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me. (Psalm 5:7-8). For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue. Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out, for they have rebelled against you. (Psalm 5:9-10). But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him [or her] with favor as with a shield. (Psalm 5:11-12). Take refuge in the Lord! And rejoice in His protection! And sing praises to the Lord from a joyful heart! For He will lead you in His righteousness! He will lead you to the Rock of your salvation! He will lead you into eternal life in heaven on the last day! Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. (Psalm 61:1-3). Let me dwell in your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Selah (Psalm 61:4). For you, O God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. (Psalm 61:5). Prolong the life of the king; may his years endure to all generations! May he be enthroned forever before God; appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him! (Psalm 61:6-7). So will I ever sing praises to your name, as I perform my vows day after day. (Psalm 61:8). Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear my prayer! And appoint your steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over me! The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man [or woman] runs into it and is safe! (Proverbs 18:10). Call upon the name of the Lord with your whole heart and mind and strength and soul! Call upon the name of the Lord and you will be saved! For the Lord answers everyone who calls upon His name!
