A Rifle for My Son: https://www.armsarchives.com/ In the fall of 1954, a twelve-year-old boy could mail twelve dollars to Chicago and have his first rifle delivered to the family mailbox, no license, no form, no questions. For seventy years, that was how American boys got their first guns. This is the story of the world that mailed them: the Wish Book on the kitchen table, the invented bookkeeper's name stamped on millions of barrels, the "cheap" Sears rifle that was secretly a Belgian Mauser, and Ted Williams, the greatest hitter who ever lived, who put his real name on the working man's gun. And the story of one signature, on October 22, 1968, that ended it all. If this was your world, or your father's, subscribe. These are the stories we keep. 25 "Illegal" Weapons Apache Warriors Built From Scrap to Outsmart the U.S. Army In 1886 a Chiricahua named Massai jumped a prison train near St. Louis and walked twelve hundred miles home carrying nothing he had not made himself. By then it was against the law to sell an Apache a rifle, a pound of powder, or a single bar of lead. 🏹🔥 Number 12 was not a weapon at all, and it beat the United States Cavalry. A RIFLE FOR MY SON: https://www.armsarchives.com/ The stories nobody wrote down. Who handed you your first gun, what he did for a living, and why he took that one off the rack. We're putting that world on paper while there are still men who can say it right. In 1977 a boy could put thirty-seven dollars and fifty cents on a glass counter in ones — a summer of mowing yards — and the man behind it would take a rifle down off the rack, ask whether his father was good with it, take the boy's word, and let him carry it home himself. Nothing signed. Nobody called the house. That rifle was a Marlin Model 60, and no other object in this country's history passed through more American hands. Marlin built eleven million of them between 1960 and 2020 — more Model 60s than Winchester built Model 94s in a hundred and twenty years. By a wide margin, the most-produced rifle in American history. And it wasn't a deer rifle or a war rifle. It was a .22 that a twelve-year-old bought with his own money. Most of them didn't come from a hardware store. They came from Kmart, Western Auto, Coast to Coast, Otasco, and the JCPenney Christmas catalog on the living room table. The man who sold it to you there was perfectly decent. He also didn't know your father. That was the entire difference, and nobody standing in either line thought it was a difference at all. There's a reason the same rifle wore two different names on two counters four miles apart. In the 1950s, Roger Kenna — running a company his father had bought at a sheriff's auction for one hundred dollars, with a hundred-thousand-dollar mortgage on it — created a company with no factory, no assembly line, and no employees. Marlin's own historian calls it what it was: a paper organization. Kenna built it to find out which counter was going to be left standing, the hardware store or the store on the highway. Then he died at forty-eight, two years before the first rifle carried the name he made, four years before the first Kmart in this country opened its doors. The answer came back twenty-five years later, and it didn't arrive the way anyone expected. It didn't arrive as a hardware store closing. It arrived as a request. Whichever name is stamped on your barrel — you were not sold a lesser rifle. Same plant in Connecticut, same steel, same action, same Micro-Groove barrel. The difference was the wood and the sights. The two names were aimed at two storefronts. They were never aimed at the man standing in front of one. Go get yours out of the closet and look at the barrel. There's a town stamped into it. New Haven. North Haven. Mayfield, Kentucky. Huntsville, Alabama. Four towns, four different Americas — and that stamp is the only thing left in the house that can tell you which one built the rifle in your hands. Then tell me in the comments which town is on yours, who handed it to you, and what he did for a living. Sources - Marlin Firearms: A History of the Guns and the Company That Made Them — Lt. Col. THE VISE-GRIP ID CARD ($2) — spot a real American-made Vise-Grip in 60 seconds, before you pay: https://www.thefinalshiftdocument.com/ In 1902, a thirteen-year-old blacksmith's apprentice in Leavenworth, Kansas taught himself a way to make steel hold an edge longer than anyone around him could explain. Sixty years later, that discovery became the Buck 110 Folding Hunter — the most copied folding knife in American history, and the product that put the words "Buck knife" into the American language forever. This is the story of how Buck Knives survived everything the American manufacturing industry could throw at it — Chinese competition, California's collapsing business climate, a brutal recession, and the slow disappearance of an entire industry — while companies with longer histories and more famous names quietly ceased to exist. On July 29, 2004, Schrade President Walter Gardiner sent his remaining workers a one-page letter. The last day of employment would be July 30th. Two hundred and fifty people. One day. The Old Timer. The Uncle Henry. The Schrade name itself — sold at auction, moved to China, still on shelves today with names that once meant something specific and now mean nothing except that someone owns the trademark. Buck Knives chose a different path. They loaded fifty tractor-trailers, drove 1,400 miles north from El Cajon, California to Post Falls, Idaho, and built the factory again from scratch. They did not sell the name. They moved the hands. This video covers the full story: Hoyt Buck's founding in a church basement during World War II, the invention of the Model 110 Folding Hunter in 1963, the Forever Warranty that changed the American knife industry, the California energy crisis that forced an impossible decision, the 190 workers who didn't make the move north, and where Buck Knives stands today — fifteen million Model 110s later — with its first non-family president and its first new lock design in sixty years. Smith & Wesson’s Model 19 became one of America’s most famous police revolvers. But by the late 1970s, something was going wrong: K-frame .357 Magnums were coming back with cracked and split barrels. For years, hot handloads, ammunition, and shooters themselves took much of the blame. Then Smith & Wesson engineer Dick Baker started looking at what had actually changed inside the gun. What he found led to an entirely new revolver frame. This is the story of the hidden engineering problem behind the Model 19 and Model 66, Bill Jordan’s warning that had been sitting in print since 1965, the rise of lightweight high-velocity .357 Magnum ammunition, and the quiet factory changes that removed steel from exactly the wrong place. It’s also the story of how Baker and a small group of Smith & Wesson workers developed the “Super K” prototype that became the L-frame—and eventually the Model 586 and legendary stainless Model 686. The strange part? The public story surrounding the new revolver focused on competition and police combat shooting. The cracked K-frame barrels that helped drive its creation were never prominently presented as the reason it existed. No single villain caused it. Police departments were improving training. Ammunition companies were responding to new demands. Bill Jordan had already warned shooters about a steady diet of full-power .357 loads. And Smith & Wesson’s engineers were solving problems as they found them. Yet the barrels still split. This is how one small engineering change, decades of police doctrine, and a nearly forgotten warning helped create one of Smith & Wesson’s most successful revolvers. Which would you carry today the classic K-frame Model 19 or the heavier L-frame 686?
