They can be phrases worded to gain your trust, worded to be confusing, even slightly confusing, just enough to throw you off balance so that you'll think and/or act their preferred way. Get a 'free' book, download, recipe, coupon, sample, whatever, just enter your email address. It isn't free if you have to give the supplier your email address is it? So simple, so common, so Dark actually. Why make a new account when you log in someplace? Why not use your Facebook login, or your Google login or another well known account, that way you don't have to make another user name and another password you'll have to remember. Problem is, when you do this, you're giving this new account full access to whatever account you decide to use. Whether it's Facebook or Google or some other, you've just given this new account full access to your Facebook friends, your page, or in the case with Google, your contacts and even your documents. These are examples of Dark Patterns. Sometimes they're innocent, sometimes they aren't innocent. In their rawest form, they are methods of phishing, getting whatever private or personal information the actors can get. This isn't new.
