“Secretory A”
Secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA) — the body’s first line of immune defense along all mucosal surfaces, including:
- the gut (intestinal lining)
- the sinuses and lungs
- the urinary and reproductive tracts
It’s produced by plasma cells in the mucosa and secreted as a dimeric antibody (two IgA units linked by a “secretory component”). Its job is to neutralize pathogens and toxins before they enter the bloodstream and to maintain a healthy regulatory dialogue between the immune system and gut microbiota.
When levels drop — as in low sIgA — you see increased permeability (a “leaky” gut barrier), food sensitivities, recurring infections, and chronic inflammation.
Mercury’s Direct and Indirect Impacts on Secretory IgA
Mercury (especially methylmercury and Hg²⁺ ionic mercury) can interfere with sIgA both directly and indirectly through several documented mechanisms:
1. Inhibition of Plasma Cells
Mercury selectively targets B‑cell and plasma‑cell function, suppressing antibody production.
Studies on animal and human models show mercury exposure reduces total IgA synthesis, especially in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue.
Chronic exposure (e.g., from dental amalgams, contaminated fish, or industrial sources) leads to immune dysregulation — reduced tolerance and exaggerated inflammatory signaling instead of balanced mucosal immunity.
2. Oxidative and Mitochondrial Stress in Gut Epithelium
Mercury binds to sulfhydryl (-SH) groups on enzymes, blocking glutathione-related antioxidant defenses.
This oxidative stress damages tight junction proteins (occludin, zonulin) and goblet cells that help secrete the protective mucus layer where sIgA works.
Once that barrier is compromised, sIgA secretion and stability drop further because the mucosa is physically deteriorating.
3. Neuroimmune Downregulation via the Gut–Brain Axis
Mercury is neurotoxic to the vagus nerve, which is strongly tied to mucosal immune activation.
Impaired vagal tone → less cholinergic anti‑inflammatory signaling → weakened sIgA response.
4. Microbial Dysbiosis
Mercury has antimicrobial activity but kills off beneficial species preferentially (like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium).
This imbalance promotes the growth of resistant species, including some sulfur‑reducing and methanogenic microbes that metabolize mercury compounds — disturbing mucosal ecology.
Dysbiosis itself diminishes local sIgA stimulation, compounding the drop.
How This Manifests Clinically
You’ll often find the following in those with measurable mercury burden:
- Chronically low sIgA on stool or saliva tests
- Recurrent infections of the sinuses, gut, or urinary tract
- Food sensitivities that seem to multiply over time
Persistent gut inflammation and permeability (zonulin elevation, calprotectin variability)
Fatigue, brain fog, and anxiety (driven by both neurotoxicity and chronic immune activation)
