That was a book I received one Christmas when I was a small child.
What a fantastic read that was, I have never forgotten it.
Back then punishment of schoolboys were harsh and extreme, BUT, children back then knew the boundaries and what would happen if they spoke out of line or if they stepped out of line.
Now I'm not saying that treatment was right, BUT, compare the world of the young back then to where we are today.
Nowadays it seems it's the children who can say whatever they want safe in the knowledge that there's barely anything their parents can do in the way of discipline.
Whereas it's now the parents who have to be careful with what they say, not only to their children, but also what they're overheard to have said by a listening child.
Something completely innocent will be overheard and the child will gleefully report it to a higher authority.
Are you aware that schools are now imprinting into children's heads the contact number for child line, might not be a bad thing I hear you say, but when you think a little more critically this could become a catastrophic problem, take the scenario where a child doesn't get their own way and are then told off by their parents because the child kicked off, the child if they so wish now has the tools to seek their immature revenge on their parents, unaware of the destructive consequences of the accusations they've just aimed at their parents.
Yes by all means all children should be protected, absolutely, BUT, when we remove and restrict all parents from disciplining their children whilst giving unlimited power and authority to a small child we put society and our children in great danger.
Sadly we are seeing a worrying trend where children can behave in destructive ways and are allowed to continue, parents can't say or do anything for fear of authorities coming for them and their children.
This then leads to the child behaving as they wish; knowing there's no consequences.
Throughout my 33 year long career in working with children (as schoolteacher, youth club worker, sports coach, youth mentor) as they develop into tomorrow's youth I have seen this societal decline, children now hold all the cards whilst it's the parents who are now afraid of the consequences.
Protect children yes!!! But we've now taken it too far, and now it's the kind loving decent parents who are in need of protection, protection from their child who doesn't know what damage they're doing, to their parents and **to themselves**
