Why Montana's Highest Highway Turns Deadly Every July

The Beartooth Highway is 68 miles of U.S. 212 between Red Lodge and Cooke City, and it's closed more of the year than it's open. It's 75 degrees when you leave Red Lodge and you gain a vertical mile in about 12 miles of pavement, so the rider who reaches the top at 10,947 feet is not the same rider who started.
