When the Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call on April 20, 2025, it was a call that would send shockwaves through the entire department. The Sheriff, Billy Merrifield had just been found unresponsive in his patrol vehicle. When deputies arrived at the scene, they immediately began life-saving measures, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The official cause of death was determined to be a fentanyl overdose, it left many puzzled. The question was & still is though, how exactly did the substance end up in him.
