You know that feeling when you're out on the ocean and you look down into the deep water, and for just a second, you wonder
what's looking back up at you? For the crew of the Helena's Pride, that nightmare became real on a calm morning in early
September 2018.
The Helena's Pride was a thirty-two-foot commercial fishing vessel based out of Nuuk, Greenland. She'd been working these
waters for nearly fifteen years without incident. The boat was owned and captained by Marcus Johansen, a forty-eight-year-old
fisherman who'd spent his entire adult life on the water. Marcus wasn't just experienced—he was careful. Almost obsessively so.
He ran safety drills monthly, kept his emergency equipment maintained, and never took chances with the weather or ice
conditions.
