People in Communist countries were persecuted for going to church;
they were persecuted for not adhering to the party line;
they didn’t have any free TV stations to watch if they even had a TV;
they didn’t have any free radio broadcast to listen to if they even had a radio;
they had no telephones because only party officials had them;
they had no cars because only party officials had them;
people who favored Western clothing, Western technology, Western press, Western education, Western media or anything Western was considered enemies of the state, and God forbid you helped someone escape the country or cross the Berlin Wall, because you would be incarcerated and tortured if not worse;
They could not travel without permission and they were asked exactly why, for how long, and what the return date was;
The food lines were very long, and markets were frequently empty, and even the food rations they got were insufficient;
People had to barter with others to get the things they needed — tools, appliances, clothes or light bulbs because they had no extra money to buy them with;
If martial law was enacted, you could not be on the street or you would be arrested and/or shot;
a doctor could earn $20.00 per month, whereas doctors in the United States or Europe earned thousand of dollars more per month, especially if their were specialists, alongside a tailor earning the same amount of money;
people in Communist countries could not get the extra things or supplies they needed to fix things or supplement what their families needed, because they were admonished that the Communist system/Socialist system/Stalinist system was the best system in the world, the Americans and Europeans and Asians were the enemy, and they had free education (read indoctrination) and free healthcare (read: Band-Aids and aspirin), so sit down and shut up;
If they had income that their jobs did not pay for and had expensive things, they were interrogated on where they were getting the money, from whom, for what, and why, because earning extra money outside of your job with the state or buying costly items within the state or outside of the state was a capitalist plot and subversive behaviour;
people who were sick or injured were made to wait for months on the socialist system, and they had to pay for their own medicine and/or and their own bandages, even their own surgeries, and then had to pay the doctor to change the bandages to avoid infection;
Guards had to be bribed with tobacco or vodka so they could turn the other way;
they were persecuted for criticizing the party line;
they were persecuted for criticizing the media spewing out fake news and propaganda;
They were being followed because one of their neighbors snitched on them, even if they did nothing wrong or illegal;
they were stopped on the street by the state police and demanded of their papers;
and if they didn’t have their papers right on them when stopped by the police, they were interrogated and worse would come if the person couldn’t give them the answers they wanted to hear:
“Where are you going?”
“Where are you going to?”
“Who are you working for?”
“Why are you on the street?”
“Where do you work?”
“Why are you not working?”
“Why do you have long hair?”
“Why are you going to church?”
“That is against the government!”
“Why were you talking to that person?”
“Why are you talking abut this subversion?”
On and on and on.
