I want to tell you something and if this frightens anybody I don't apologize because my job is to stir you up to the point that you get serious about God and quit living with one foot in the world and one foot in the church You won't go to heaven until your mind is made up until you're born again until the Spirit of God abides in you until church is your life not just your week-end activity that fills in an hour and a half on Sunday to soothe your hardened conscience There must be a life that's lived You must love the things of God You won't walk around with a chip on your shoulder and be angry about everything that's happening in the world Life won't be about you anymore or yours anymore.

And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. ~ Luke 13:23-24
And someone said to Him, ’Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?’ And He said to them, ‘Strive to enter by the narrow door. For many I tell you will seek to enter and will not be able.’”
I don't know how that affects you but that is a shocking statement. There are going to be many people who want to enter the kingdom of God, who want to be saved and they're not going to be able, really a very shocking statement. He says, "Strive to enter by the narrow door." He makes it seem so difficult; so difficult, in fact, that many people are going to endeavor to do it and not be able.
That just goes against the grain of what all of us have exposed to pretty much. We hear the gospel presented in ways that make it seem very easy to be a Christian. Pray this prayer, say these words, it's a gift, just reach out and receive the gift. That's all it takes. It's really simple to be a Christian. It's really easy to be a Christian. Basic understanding, Jesus died for you and if you want your sins forgiven believe in Jesus, say these words, “Jesus save me” and you're in.
What's the striving about? What is this about wanting to enter and not being able to enter? This makes salvation seem very, very difficult. That's just contrary to everything we've experienced. We've grown up, some of us have, in evangelistic churches and...and we're pretty familiar with how we do evangelism. We're familiar with what's often called the invitation at the end of a sermon or the altar call.
That is used here and in Matthew 7:13-14. You know the passage, very familiar in the Sermon on the Mount. We've looked at it many, many times, but it's such a critical text. Jesus says, "Enter by the narrow gate. The gate is wide, the way is broad that leads to destruction. Many are those who enter it. The gate is narrow; the way is narrow that leads to the life. Few are those who find it." It's a narrow door. It's hard to find. There are so many voices. There's so much confusion. There's so much chaos. There's so much deception, so much false Christianity all over the place that it's hard to find the true door. And once you find the true door, listen to this, once you've actually found the true gospel, once you've gotten rid of all the garbage that surrounds Christianity because that's Satan's ploy disguising himself as an angel of light... Falsifying Christianity is his primary enterprise. It's his primary enterprise. ~ John MacArthur

Because of the influence of the Self-righteous leaders on the brats of our generation. Most believe a false gospel oblivious of the truth. Inside the church buildings and outside the church buildings.
They are deceived into thinking they are saved, when in reality they are not. They live a false life, filled with false promises and false hope. Ultimately, they are missing out on the true joy and peace that is found in Jesus.
“To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’ For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.” ~ Luke 7:31-35
These words of Jesus are directed at the people who are surrounding Him at the moment in which He spoke. He describes those people as brats. And while they are the immediate object of His words, the principle here is timeless. And there have been and there are and there will be brats by this kind of definition in every generation. He is speaking of people who respond to the gospel like a brat. The message of God to sinners about repentance, faith, forgiveness, salvation, does not receive from them the response that it should.

There have always been critics who said that Jesus was a noble teacher, He was a religious leader, and He was a spiritual man. He had grandiose ideas of what He wanted to accomplish. He wanted to teach people true religion. He wanted to teach people morality and virtue. He made a noble effort at it, but it all kind of went bad. It all ended up in a terrible tragedy. He got caught in the gears of His own ambition and He ended up dead; and the critics have often said this was not the plan, it was a tragic ending to a noble effort.
Well, of course, nothing could be further from the truth than that Jesus was surprised by His death. Jesus was not surprised by His death, He came for that purpose. The murder of Jesus came as no surprise to Him, the cross was the very reason for which He came. Scripture says He was the Lamb slain from before the foundation of the world; and believe me, from before the foundation of the world, the eternal Son knew exactly why He was coming into the world. And even Jesus the man in the world understood that the purpose of His incarnation was His death and resurrection.

Because we have been approached by Jesus somewhere along the road in our lives. In our blindness, in our desperation He passed by, and our hearts were awakened, and we cried out, “Son of David, have mercy on me.” And He heard our cry, didn’t He? And all of this is possible because He went all the way to Jerusalem, all the way to the cross, and out the other side of the open tomb.
The high King of heaven, the God of very God incarnate becomes the true servant and the true slave of a sinner, of a debased, lowly outcast. This is the kind of thing Jesus taught the disciples, as we saw this morning, isn’t it? “You want to be great in the kingdom? Then be the servant. Do you want to be first in the kingdom? Then be the slave of all.”

There is one great benefit that the Christian gospel offers that transcends all other benefits and leads to all other benefits. It is a benefit, frankly, that corresponds directly to man’s greatest need, and that is where Christianity marks itself out from all other religions on the planet. It alone addresses man’s greatest need. There are religions that offer ethics and morality, and social responsibility, and family values, and a measure of love and peace, somewhat a measure of fulfillment, satisfaction, maybe even a certain measure of happiness. But what is man’s greatest need?
The greatest need of man, simply put, is to escape the wrath of God poured out on sinners eternally in hell. The greatest need of man is to escape the wrath of God poured out eternally on sinners in hell. Only Christianity, only the Christian gospel offers the benefit that meets that need. Only through the Christian gospel can anyone escape the wrath of God poured out on sinners eternally in hell.
