I don’t really feel it as bad as these young kids because I’m on the frontside, secure with my retirement, our fixed 30 year mortgage (that they desperately want me to change) and my income is more than my expenses (not by much). IMAGINE THIS … the AVERAGE single bedroom efficiency apartment is $1800.00 in America. WE were always taught NO MORE than 1/3 of your income on your housing. THAT’S $1800.00 X 3 = $5400.00 a month net needed (add the tax of 12 %) = $6136.00 or $73,632.00 INCOME NEEDED TODAY to get to 1/3! Not happening today, so what IS happening today. Let’s say min wage of $7.36. THAT’S $14,720.00 a year (no tax) housing costs of $21,600.00 … no go! So let’s say min wage of $15.00 (California/Washington etc) THAT’S $30,000.00 a year (no tax) with housing costs of $21,600.00 so that leaves $8,400.00 a year to live on, or $168.00 a WEEK for food/clothing/medical/dental/gas/car ETC … no go! Let’s say min wage is $20.00? THAT’S $40,000.00 a year (no tax) with housing costs of $21,600.00 so that leaves 18,400.00 a year to live on, or $368.00 a WEEK for food/clothing/medical/dental/gas/car ETC … no go! HERE'S THE DEATH … YOUNG KIDS CANNOT LEAVE HOME AND MAKE IT RIGHT AWAY … they can’t. They know this, and they hate Washington (and us) for it. Let’s do a real budget for WHEN they CAN leave home! Mortgage/Rent $2,000.00 Heat $85.00 Electric $95.00 Car payment $186.00 Food for home $650.00 Beverages $30.00 Restaurants $80.00 Clothes $40.00 Shoes $20.00 Life Insurance $25.00 Car Insurance $120.00 Fuel $120.00 AAA $55.00 Car maintenance $25.00 Internet $35.00 Credit Card $120.00 Licenses $10.00 Books etc $10.00 Movies $16.00 Misc $40.00 Poor donation $200.00 Medical/Dental $400.00 SUMMARY $4440.00/Month needed $4880.00/Month Salary $58,560/year or $30.00/hour How many businesses can pay $30.00/hour and survive?
