Skip forward to the owners not being able to communicate with them....=....ignorant for not knowing/understanding.
I grew up deep in farm country. That word was what they used to describe unskilled labor. People not educated in a trade. It didn't mean lazy or dishonest exactly. It meant people who couldn't operate or fix equipment, but could use a shovel.
