The trip is going well until they are eating lunch one day. The ski resort uses explosives to create small, controlled avalanches so that there are no big avalanches, and when they are eating one day, one of the avalanches comes a little too close to the restaurant and seems like it will crush them. In that moment of panic, the mother in the family grabs her children and the father...grabs his iPhone.
In this era of capitalism, consumption and materialism rule supreme. We are taught to constantly want in a manner that is unhealthy not only in preserving our resources on Earth, but also in matter of the soul! This passage says to "Love not the world". It is not a suggestion to not appreciate God’s creation. It is a commandment to not get attached to the superficial and fleeting love of worldly delights. With the amount of options available in our times, we can see how society has changed. We can all witness this becoming a larger problem not just for society but also as individuals. As Jesus remarked, we may see that Love of the Lord is the only true route to salvation. Regardless of what a man owns or collects, what he truly owns are the things that he can sacrifice.
Prayer:
Blessed Father, I have been weak more times than I could mention. I pray today that you will strengthen the bond between us and help me distance myself from earthly temptations. I ask that you will light my path so that I can see that it is your love, and only your love, that is worth clinging to. Free me from this vicious cycle of consumption, the allure of greed, the temptation of lust and gluttony, and help me manage my pride to give all of what I have, all of what I am, to you. I pray all of this in your name. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse....
No matter what any passport says, if we are a disciple of Jesus, there is no earthly country that can hold us, no borders that can fully claim us, and no flag that flies above us that can spiritually contain us. We belong to Jesus and are citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven. We have more in common with the believing aboriginal tribesman of Indonesia, the Christian refugees from Africa; the Bedouin brothers and sisters in Egypt; the Spirit-filled Brazilian housewife and her husband; the high-rise believing business person in Hong Kong; the thousands of believers in India, Pakistan, and Asia; and the hundreds of thousands of Christ-followers scattered throughout the Middle East and the Mediterranean Rim; than we have in common with your next-door neighbors if they don't know Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior. And because we are citizens of that holy and heavenly Kingdom, we eagerly await the arrival of our King and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. So we live on tiptoe in this world, looking to the horizon, anticipating and awaiting the arrival of our coming King!
My Prayer...
Glorious God and Father, we look forward to the day when people, more people than any of us can count, folks from every nation, tribe, people, and language join the angels and elders around your throne and worship Jesus in joy, together forever (Revelation 7:9-11). Make all of your scattered children from all over our world one, as we await our Savior. We ask you Lord Jesus, please come quickly, and in your name, we pray. Amen.

View MorePaul made it a point of duty to God to pray frequently for the Philippian believers and their infant, persecuted church. He was thankful to God for their conversion when he preached the Gospel among them, and he knew that God did not leave Philippi when he was forced to do so. Paul could pray in a spirit of joyfulness for these fellow Christians because he was confident (verse 6) that God would continually work in them a work of godliness until He perfected it on the Day of Christ (the Rapture and Resurrection of the dead in Christ, see 1 Thessalonians 4:17).

Have you heard this? While this may seem profound at first, if we dig deeper I think we can see that this phrase is a superficial explanation for something more meaningful. As these verses discuss, do we find it marvelous or mysterious when it rains or snows? Do we dwell on the ways that the Lord is working or do we take it more or less for granted? If we stop and take a moment to consider what we understand about our existence on Earth, we can start to appreciate how beautiful life can be. It helps us to understand our place and our own existence as well as reveal some of the mysterious ways that God is working.
Our worries are often about what God has planned for us: why won’t He show us a sign? Why do we feel alone? We become anxious over things beyond our control, causing us to forget that God wants us to enjoy our time on Earth. Worship takes many forms, and one of the most important forms of worship is appreciating the natural world that God created. Rain, snow, thunder, lightning, humans, animals...instead of viewing God’s plan as "mysterious", try to appreciate the wonders of His love and the infinite manifestations that we can see, feel, touch, smell, and taste.
Thought:
Take a moment from your busy life and go into nature. The next time you encounter rain, snow, sunshine, wind, plants, and animals, realize that these are all God’s creations. More importantly, realize your own place among them and that you, too, are God’s work.
