Have you ever said anything nearly as nice as the words that are said in these verses? I honestly don’t think that I have ever been so nice to any person in my entire life. These verses have been said every Sunday in many churches since they were first repeated. "Peace be with you." "And also with you." How many times have we heard these words at church? More importantly, how many times have these words really meant something to us?
Jesus wants to teach his apostles everything that he knows, leaving them peace and to comfort them after his death. His message to them was perfect, leaving them the Holy Spirit to guide them. He emphasizes that the world does not provide the same to them.
Notice the word at the beginning, "comforter." The Holy Spirit is all around us, providing comfort to us. What a nice reminder that is to have! We are not alone and shall be comforted. Not by a peace that the world can provide, but by something greater. Draw upon that peace whenever it is needed. Do not be afraid or troubled, for that is what the Lord has asked.

Thoughts on Today's Verse....
God is faithful. We can trust God to keep his promises, and his purposes for us are always for our ultimate good (Romans 8:28-29). How do we know? The sunrise each morning is a reminder that the Father of heaven and earth is at work keeping his universe in working order through Jesus (Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3). Since it is true in nature, it can be true in the spiritual realm as well. Greet each sunrise as a reminder of God's faithfulness and that Jesus, who came to earth as Immanuel, God with us (Matthew 1:23; John 1:1-18), is holding us, our hopes, our futures, and our world together.
My Prayer...
O Magnificent and Majestic Creator, I greet today as your gift and a reminder of your faithfulness. Each day the sun rises, I anticipate the day you honor your promise to send your Son back to bring us home to you in the dawning of glory. Please give me a keen sense of your faithful presence today as I await this great day expectantly. I pray this through him, Jesus, the one in whom all your promises find their fulfillment, and every amen is spoken (2 Corinthians 1:20-22).

Is it not because of the ungodly gain that wicked men often make for themselves? They seem to "get away with it" and live like kings while the meek and godly live like paupers. But the secret blessings of the heart are with the righteous, while the oppressive are an abomination to Him.

People get old and we die. People change: our bodies, our moods, our minds, our friends, our families. Wouldn’t it be nice if it was constant? Take comfort in knowing that one thing in our lives is constant: God.
Imagine that you are in a business deal with someone. Now imagine that person keeps changing the terms of the deal and coming up with this and that excuse. You wouldn’t feel too comfortable, would you? James writes this verse to reinforce to the early church that God can be trusted because He never changes. God existed before time did. He created both heaven and earth. He is the same today, yesterday, tomorrow, and even before the existence of todays, yesterdays, and tomorrows! His covenant with humanity never changed and He has always kept His promises to us.
James also wants to remind us that all good things, "every perfect gift," comes from God. "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made" (John 1:3). What things are you thankful for? What things do you wish you didn’t have to deal with? Consider how lucky you are to exist at all. God made everything. We are responsible for nothing. This has been true through all time and will forever be.
Lastly, James uses "Father of lights" to describe God. God created the sun, moon, stars, heaven, and earth. These things are all light, which can also represent goodness. All the way back in Genesis God marvels at the goodness of his creation. It is the perfect gift to Himself and to all of us. He is nothing but good and we must understand that about him.
What a delight it is to rejoice in an omnipotent, kind, perfect, and unchanging creator of light! Let us rejoice with all of our voices and try to help every heart to see the wonders of his love! Amen.
