View MoreFasten Your Truth Belt (Katie Faris) Reflect What was your first thought when you woke up this morning? Even before you opened your eyes or lifted your head from your pillow, was there a situation from yesterday replaying in your mind? Did you start rehearsing today’s to-do list? Awake or asleep, our minds are constantly active, and our toes don’t have to touch the floor before we face the choice to believe lies or truth about God, ourselves, and our circumstances. It isn’t an accident that Paul—who understood our human tendency to exchange “the truth about God for a lie” and the temptation to worship and serve “the creature rather than the Creator” (Rom. 1:25)—listed the belt of truth as the first piece of spiritual armor that we’re to put on. When Paul wrote, “Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth” (Eph. 6:14), he wasn’t telling his readers simply to accessorize a cute outfit, though the belt he had in mind does make a statement. Worn both on and off duty, a Roman soldier’s belt was a symbol of military status, identifying his role and position. And when we wear the belt of truth, we identify with the God of truth (Isa. 65:16) and actively oppose the devil, the father of lies (John 8:44). Each day brings an onrush of temptations to doubt God’s sufficiency, goodness, power, wisdom, and love—to take matters into our own hands, to look for solutions and answers outside of the boundaries of God’s word, and to give in to worry, fear, self-pity, bitterness, anger, or despair. How will we stand against our enemy’s lies, his “craftiness in deceitful schemes” (Eph. 4:14)? The only way to stand is by dressing in the armor that our Lord forged for us, and this starts with fastening the belt of truth around our waists. The truth about God’s revealed character in Scripture, his wonderful promises for his children, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and our identity as God’s beloved sons and daughters secures us for today’s—and every day’s—spiritual battles. Are you wearing your spiritual belt today? Whether you’re reading this devotion in the morning, over your lunch break, or near the end of your day, fasten your belt with these three truth reminders: In Christ, 1. you are a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). You belong to God, and your primary identity is found in him, as his beloved son or daughter. Your identity is not found in your relationship status, your career, who your friends are, where you travel, your accomplishments, how many followers you have, or anything else. In Christ, 2. “there is therefore now no condemnation” (Rom. 8:1). Through our Lord’s shed blood on the cross, the punishment for your sin is paid in full—past, present, and future. And when you confess your sin, God is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse you from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). In Christ, 3. you possess a living hope (1 Pet. 1:3). Your circumstances may tell you to lose heart and give up, but God’s word tells you that your “light momentary affliction is preparing . . . an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” (2 Cor. 4:17). So don’t look to what is seen but to what is eternal. Fix your eyes on Jesus and trust his promises: he is with you right now (Matt. 28:20), and you will be with him for all eternity (Rev. 21:3). Respond Read Psalm 25:1–5. How does the psalmist seek truth? What lies have crept into your headspace recently—lies about God, yourself, or your circumstances? A tool which has helped me, and which might help you, is a lie and truth chart. Here’s how it works: for each lie you’re tempted to believe, write down a truth from Scripture to combat it. Then place your chart somewhere you will see it often. Pray Father God, Thank you that even before I woke up this morning, you knew my thoughts, my ways, and my words (Ps. 139:2–4). What’s more, you already had a plan to watch over me, to keep me, “to hem me in, behind and before” (Ps. 139:5). One way you do this is through the wonderful truth of your word. Thank you for the assurance that through faith in Christ, and by the power of his death and resurrection, (1) I am a new creation; (2) I no longer fear condemnation; and (3) I possess a living hope. Help me to believe the truth and stand firmly in it. Help me to know You more and the power of Your Ressurection. Open my spiritual eyes and ears Holy Spirit so I can know You and fellowship with You. So I can be led by You and know what I am to do each and every day of my life. I yield to You. Mold me and make me into the image of Christ. Take out of my life anything that is hindering me from living the life I was created to live and fulfilling the purposes I was born to fulfill. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray Amen and Amen.
