The democrats have me confused on one hand they don't think they need the scotus cheif justice because the constitution only requires it when trying the president. But if Trump isn't being tried as the president then he is just an american citizen. Last I looked the constitution doesn't cover impeachment of regular citizens. If they want impeachment, then follow the constitution and impeach the man as the president or drop the impeachment and charge him as a private citizen in a court of law, as they say he is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. Or are they afraid to let 12 citizens judge the evidence?
