When I was just about to graduate from high school guys returning from Vietnam basically told me the same thing. It seemed to me then, and very much so now, most of the citizens on North Vietnam were very committed to their government while the South not so much. Later we learned we were sending 18 year old teens to fight for the South which had a 21 year old draft age and an extremely high desertion rate. It was an ill-conceived war and terribly mismanaged by President Johnson and Robert McNamara.
