We are used to finding shadows on the ground, but they can also be cast down onto layers of cloud above us. Beatrice Frei (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 48,471) spotted the linear shadows of aircraft condensation trails in the Altocumulus clouds over High Barnet, England. The contrails themselves were not visible through the lower Altocumulus. Only their shadows appeared, like those of bamboo stalks falling across the translucent shōji screen of a traditional Japanese home.
