The Federalist Papers Eight days. That is how long Ilhan Omar went without showing her face on camera after federal agents raided her Washington home on October 12.Written statements, yes. Fundraising texts, plenty. But no video, no press conference, no explanation. Then Tuesday night, she finally reappeared. Not at a podium. Not with her lawyers. In the back seat of a car, filming a selfie video for TikTok.Her eyes were wet. She was visibly choked up. She looked like someone who had spent the week crying. And what did she say?"We're not going to be intimidated. We're not going to be silenced. We're not going to be scared."Then she asked for money."It is going to be a very expensive and challenging time," she told supporters, thanking everyone who sent $5, $10 or $20 and asking them to keep it coming. Here is the problem.Omar sits in one of the bluest districts in the country. Her reelection is not in serious danger. So what exactly is about to get so expensive?Campaigns don't suddenly get pricey because federal agents carried boxes out of your house. Legal defenses do.To be fair, Omar has not been charged with anything. She denies all wrongdoing and calls the probe political payback. She deserves the same presumption of innocence as any American. But this was no random knock on the door. According to Fox News, Homeland Security Investigations executed a search warrant signed by a federal judge in a criminal investigation into her immigration paperwork.Judges do not approve raiding a sitting congresswoman's home on a hunch. So one has to wonder. If this is all a baseless smear, why the tears? Why eight days off camera? Why the urgent plea for cash?People confident they did nothing wrong usually say so, loudly and on camera.People who know they are in real trouble tend to go quiet, and start raising money. What do you think the tears were really about, fear of losing an election or fear of what investigators found in those boxes?
