Presidents have been renovating and expanding the White House for more than 100 years. Here are a few notable examples:
🟢James Monroe: Added the iconic curved South Portico.
🔵Andrew Jackson: Added the North Portico entrance.
🔴Theodore Roosevelt: Launched a major classical renovation with architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White; removed Victorian conservatories and built the original single-story West Wing to move offices out of the main residence.
🔴William Howard Taft: Remodeled and expanded the West Wing and constructed the first standalone Oval Office.
🔴Calvin Coolidge: Rebuilt the roof and added a third floor to the mansion. He also added a glass-enclosed solarium onto the roof during the 1927 renovation.
🔵 Franklin D. Roosevelt: Relocated the Oval Office to its current corner position, built an indoor therapy swimming pool, added a second floor to the West Wing, and constructed the East Wing.
🔵Harry S. Truman: Gutted the entire interior of the White House down to the outer stone walls due to severe structural decay, completely rebuilding the interior and adding a second-floor balcony to the South Portico.
🔴Donald Trump: Re-paved the Rose Garden, added a tennis pavilion, and initiated a large-scale project involving the demolition of parts of the East Wing to build a private-donor grand ballroom.
