Ilhan Omar's father, Colonel Nur Omar Mohamed, served under the Somali Dictator Siad Barre, who killed up to 200,000 people in the Isaaq Holocaust.
To escape justice, Colonel Omar lied about his involvement, slipping across the border and pretending to be a refugee in Kenya.
In this way he was able to secure entry from Kenya to United States under the refugee resettlement program, bringing Ilhan Omar and the rest of his family along with him.
If knowledge of his involvement in the Somali Dictatorship had been known, the entire family would have been denied entry to United States, ilhan Omar included.
