Brian McCannWe design and manufacture thruster valves for SpaceX. Thrusters are mini rockets. Cold gas thrusters aren’t the same as rocket fuel thrusters in space. But for anyone doubting the technical complexity Tesla has undertaken with SpaceX to get the new Roadster to “fly”, you are likely letting your politics blind you. This isn’t political or a gimmick. It’s the most impressive piece of engineering I’ve seen in a really long time. The first time I heard a rumor about this concept, I thought it was a gimmick… because it should be impossible. Five years ago, 0-60 in two seconds was considered not possible in terms of the physics. This car does it in .8 seconds. It jumps, flips, regulates its attitude like a space craft and it can drive upside down. Guys, this isn’t a conservative or liberal thing. It isn’t a ridiculous parlor trick. We need to get our politics out of the way here. Cars will be flying soon and this is the first car made by a major manufacturer to go vertical. It’s not an eVTOL. It’s a friggin car. And they put thrusters on it. Let your jaw drop every once in a while instead of clenching your teeth. It’s a modern engineering marvel. Even people like me who work in the space industry doubted this could happen. The world is changing quickly; let’s not lose our sense of awe and wonder along the way because our favorite cable news entertainment channel tells us we should. This is an insane accomplishment. Truly incredible.
