DEADLY CARGO:
An illegal immigrant pulled over for speeding on a rural Nevada highway was allegedly hauling more than 700 pounds of fentanyl and methamphetamine — enough fentanyl alone to produce seven million lethal doses, according to federal prosecutors.
Francisco Joel Garcia Farias, 26, was stopped by a Lincoln County sheriff's deputy on U.S. Highway 93 near Ash Springs after his pickup was clocked above the speed limit. A narcotics detection dog alerted to the vehicle, and deputies found 13 large storage totes packed with roughly 30 pounds of suspected fentanyl and 677 pounds of suspected methamphetamine.
To put the fentanyl quantity in perspective: prosecutors say it could kill more than twice the population of Nevada, nearly twice the population of Los Angeles, or roughly everyone in Indiana. Garcia Farias now faces federal drug trafficking charges carrying a mandatory minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life in prison on each count.
