The Federalist Papers **1. Social Intro**Look closely at the kid in the red shirt. He thought he signed up for something very different.A lot of young Americans are drawn to democratic socialism for reasons that are easy to understand. Rent is brutal. Student debt is crushing. Owning a home feels out of reach. So when someone promises to take from the billionaires and hand it to you, it sounds like justice. But here is what the brochure leaves out.You can call it democratic socialism. You can put a friendly face on it. It is still socialism, and the people running the Democratic Socialists of America are not hiding where it leads. David Jenkins, a member of DSA's National Political Committee, the group's top governing body, was caught on video saying, "Our goal is communism."Believe him.History has run this experiment over and over, and the results never change. The wealth does get redistributed, just not to you. It flows to the state and the people who run it. What gets shared equally is the poverty. The dirty jobs get shared too. Nobody gets to sit out the revolution holding a protest sign. The state decides where you work, what you earn, and what you can buy.In the Soviet Union, the government ran the factories, the farms, and the newspapers. Shortages were so common that standing in line became a way of life. And the real proof is which direction people run.East Germany had to build a wall to keep its own citizens from escaping. Millions of Cubans have fled to America, many on rafts across 90 miles of open water. Nearly 8 million Venezuelans have left what was once the richest country in South America.Nobody builds a wall to keep people out of a workers' paradise. The young man in this cartoon thought he was voting for someone else's money. He was really voting away his freedom to choose his own life. That is the misunderstanding.
