A fine crop of carrots dangled in the atmosphere over Stratford-upon-Avon, England, awaiting their autumnal harvest. Spotted by Ian Throssell (Member 9,312), the cloud carrots’ pointy taproots are features known as virga, falling precipitation that disappears before reaching the ground. The greens at the tops of Ian’s sky vegetables are Altocumulus stratiformis clouds in which ice crystals have formed and grown large enough to fall below. If these don’t win Ian a prize at the nearby Wellesbourne and Walton Horticultural Show, then we want to have a word with the judges.
