Addictions
1 Corinthians 6:12-13
“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.”
There are all kinds of addictions, but the Apostle Paul testified in these verses that “I will not be brought under the power of any”. Most people I know are not addicted to drugs or alcohol, but what about other things? What about pornography and overeating (these two are mentioned in our text)? What about smoking, or cell phones and computers? I could go on with my list, but do any of these things or something else have you under its power? This devotion came to me on Sunday morning. Due to the hurricane many woke up with no power and cell towers were out making our connection with others difficult. Let’s be honest, many of us could find ourself under bondage to our cell phone? Staying connected with family and friends is very important and that’s not what I am talking about. It’s everything else a cell phone brings into our mind.
Are we “brought under the power of any”?
Here’s a thoughtful truth, just because it is lawful does not make it ok and right for any of us to participate. Do a Bible word study on the word temperance and ask yourself if you possess it.
1 Corinthians 9:27
“But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
