California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing a fresh wave of political attacks after the White House called him the “worst governor in America” amid an escalating dispute with President Donald Trump.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle delivered the criticism in response to Newsom’s recent remarks about the president. “Gavin Newscum is the worst governor in America, and he also may be the dumbest,” Ingle said.
The confrontation intensified after Trump suggested during a midterm campaign rally that Iran could strike Los Angeles and San Diego. Newsom fired back on social media, describing Trump as “deranged and dangerous,” before telling The Hill that the president is “mentally ill.” He also demanded, “TIME FOR THE 25TH!” referring to the constitutional amendment that provides a process for removing a president who is unable to fulfill the duties of office.
Conservative criticism of Newsom is nothing new. Republican opponents have repeatedly portrayed him as one of California’s worst governors, citing his handling of COVID-19 restrictions, the state’s high taxes, and the departure of residents and businesses.
However, public opinion in California paints a more divided picture. A May 2026 survey by the Public Policy Institute of California found that 50% of adults and 54% of likely voters approved of Newsom’s performance. Another poll released in October showed his approval rating slipping to 45%, with 46% disapproving. Independent voters and rural residents were among his strongest critics.
With Newsom increasingly viewed as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, the White House’s attacks could become part of a much larger political battle. Polling already places him ahead of other potential Democratic contenders among California voters.
Whether the “worst governor” characterization gains traction beyond conservative circles or remains a partisan attack could become an important question as the next presidential election approaches.
