Ranger Tom Avery reads the mountain the way most people read a page. A salt lick set just above a trap. Oil on old iron. Mud packed under a dead man's fingernails, even though the county says he simply fell. Every clue Tom finds leads back to people he knows, and that's the heaviest weight he carries up the trail. "Nobody up here's a monster. They just all know how to look at a hard thing sideways till it stops being their problem."
