Americans are still moving south but the destinations are changing. Between July 2024 and July 2025, North Carolina overtook Texas as the country’s top destination for domestic migration, gaining about 84,000 more residents from other states than it lost. Texas followed at +67,000, with South Carolina close behind at +66,600. At the opposite end, the biggest net outflows were concentrated in some of the country’s largest states: California lost around 229,000 residents to other states, while New York lost roughly 138,000.But there are signs that the post-pandemic migration boom is evolving. Texas and Florida are still gaining residents domestically, but at a much slower pace than a few years ago. Meanwhile, the Midwest recorded positive net domestic migration for the first time this decade, with states such as Ohio and Michigan reversing substantial earlier losses. Overall, the map shows that the Sun Belt remains the main magnet for Americans moving between states , but the strongest gains are increasingly concentrated in the Carolinas and the broader Southeast rather than just Texas and Florida.
