WTF is wrong with people?
The couple who abandoned two puppies at Bogotá’s El Dorado airport said the animals could be euthanized rather than returning to the United States with them to resolve their paperwork problems.
That detail emerged after animal-protection officials stepped in to care for the dogs left behind.
The couple had traveled from Miami to Colombia, with a connection in Bogotá before continuing to Cali.
They arrived with two young puppies—a Pomeranian and an American Staffordshire Terrier mix.
But during the airport’s sanitary inspection, officials found problems with the animals’ documents. The vaccination and deworming information did not match the paperwork presented, raising concerns about its authenticity.
The puppies could not be cleared to enter the country.
According to Bogotá’s animal-protection institute, the travelers were given the option of returning to the United States with their dogs to resolve the documentation problems.
They refused.
In an interview with Blu Radio, the institute’s fauna subdirector explained that the couple said officials could take the puppies away and euthanize them if necessary. They were not going back with the animals.
Instead, they continued their journey to Cali.
The puppies stayed behind at the airport.
Staff from Bogotá’s District Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare collected both dogs and brought them into protective care.
Their initial veterinary assessment found them in good health. They received food and attention while the authorities reviewed their documents and sanitary requirements.
The couple have since been identified, and officials announced proceedings over the abandonment and possible irregularities in the paperwork.
The institute also said it would ask that the puppies not be returned to their owners. Their future placement will depend on the authorities’ decision.
For now, both are being cared for.
They were only months old.
They depended on the people who brought them on that journey to keep them safe, including when the journey became difficult.
Those people left.
Thankfully, someone else came for them—and treated their lives as worth protecting. See less
