ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: OCTOBER 6, 1824 Thomas Mundy Peterson born, first African-American to vote after Ratification of the 15th Amendment Thomas Mundy Peterson, born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He worked as janitor and handyman. His politics were Republican.
To compel Democrats to allow African-Americans to vote, congressional Republicans wrote and passed the 15th Amendment. March 1870, day after its ratification, Peterson cast his ballot in a municipal election.
In 1884, Perth Amboy presented him with a gold medallion. Abraham Lincoln was depicted on one side. Text on the other side commemorated his historic vote.
