I've been saying they WANT to lose for some time. They can make a lotta noise and gripe without being responsible for a single thing. That's why they love people like Thune, Cornyn, Tillis, Cassidy and others who are great at doing just enough to keep the same useless crowd winning while still keeping real firebrands and serious candidates out or to a minimum.
