Liz Danzico (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 64,870) had spent the week hiking in the Dolomite mountains of South Tyrol, Italy, enjoying ideal weather among clouds that were ‘cuddling the mountains’. But as she drove south, the mood changed.Near Bologna, the huge icy anvil, or incus, of a Cumulonimbus capillatus cloud loomed overhead. The powerful updrafts within the distant storm had reached the top of the troposphere, causing the cloud’s icy crown to spread out sideways, over what was likely hundreds of square miles/kilometres. The cloud cuddles, Liz realised, were behind her. ‘Suddenly,’ she said, ‘here was a cloud sending a foreboding message of the weather to come.’
