Two days before her grandmother's assisted-dyโng appointment in Ontario, Brigitte Kranendonk needed to know her grandmother truly understood what was coming. โ she asked her point-blank. Brigitte Stegemann โ the 83-year-old the family called โOmaโ โ dissolved into tears for 45 minutes straight.
Stegemann had refused Medical Assistance in Dyโng months earlier, her Christian faith front and center in that refusal. โ๐๐ฐ, ๐ ๐ฅ๐ฐ๐ฏ'๐ต ๐ธ๐ข๐ฏ๐ต ๐ต๐ฉ๐ข๐ต,โ she told her granddaughter clearly, fearing she'd displease God. But when Kranendonk took a 10-day road trip in June, the care home moved fast โ booking a MAiD assessment without a single call to the woman who'd held medical power of attorney for six years. In the competency test meant to confirm she understood what she was agreeing to, ๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ง ๐ ๐จ๐ญ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ช๐ฎ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฐ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ , insisting her two living siblings were already dead.
Forty-eight hours after she begged to take it back, Stegemann was dead โ her hands clasped in prayer, her body covered in her own blood after a nurse allegedly missed the vein and jabbed her three or four times without gloves.
Kranendonk believes staff saw a dyโng, vulnerable woman and ๐๐ง ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ. โ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ธ๐ข๐ด ๐ข ๐ท๐ถ๐ญ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข๐ฃ๐ญ๐ฆ ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ข๐ฏ ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ, ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐บ ๐ด๐ข๐ธ ๐ข๐ฏ ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ต๐ถ๐ฏ๐ช๐ต๐บ,โ she says, accusing the practitioners of being ideologically driven to push the procedure through. It was the care home's very first MAiD case โ and the practitioners still haven't spoken publicly, insisting behind closed doors that Stegemann legally consented. Kranendonk is now appealing to Ontario's Chief Coroner, the Patient Ombudsman, and Belleville Police, demanding answers for how a woman who couldn't name her own living siblings was cleared to consent to her own death.
This is what Canada's ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐-๐๐ฒโ๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐๐ ๐ข๐ฆ๐ has become โ a system aggressive enough to euthanize a devout Christian grandmother who explicitly said no, then leave her family to fight for answers while the people who wielded the needle stay silent behind the care home's walls. Stegemann spent her final decade fighting to keep living. It took the system 48 hours to erase all of it.
