The ocotillo cactus is actually not a cactus but a semi-succulent flowering plant. It's long spiny stems are leafless during dry periods and will sprout and flower after rains. Can grow up to 20 tall, prefers sandy soils and is native to CA, AZ, NM and TX. Often called the "buggy whip".
