Apparently, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Democratic-led states and local governments have filed two federal lawsuits challenging the Trump administration’s new public-charge rule. The policy would give immigration officers greater discretion to deny green cards to applicants who use, or may depend on, benefits such as Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, or housing assistance.
The Trump administration stated immigrants seeking permanent residency should demonstrate self-sufficiency and avoid depending on taxpayers. Critics argue that the rule is unlawfully broad and vague, and could discourage eligible immigrant families and U.S. citizen children from using public benefits.
