Obama’s latest AI instruction is not a conversion to national strength. It is a midterm operation. by Joseph FoscoAt a donor fundraiser he told Democrats the technology is “moving very fast in private hands” and “can be dangerous” unless they seize it. He told Jeffries to build the framework the moment they take the House. He told 2028 candidates they need a “very clear plan” on safety, children, job displacement, and the safety net. The timing and the target are the point. AI is one of Trump’s prized projects — the American lead he is trying to lock in. Vilify that baby, wrap it in danger-to-kids and job-loss language, and demand a Democratic framework, and the party gets an edge in November. Whether the United States falls behind in the actual race is secondary. Winning the House comes first. That is the most obvious recent proof they will weaken the country to win an election. Private-sector speed is still the U.S. advantage. China does not hold a seminar. It treats models, compute, and talent as power. Serious countries will soldier on. A party “public conversation,” displacement limits, and pre-clearance talk do not protect the lead. They slow the only engine still ahead of Beijing so Democrats can campaign against Trump’s AI agenda. Americans are being told, once more, to sit still for the party’s convenience. It is masks and quarantine again. Biden’s COVID rules covered faces and shut ordinary life while functioning countries kept moving. This time the instruction is to politically manage the technology that still gives the United States an edge. The rest of the serious world will not stop. The cost is paid here. The record already showed the willingness. Sequestration and procurement cuts left a smaller, less ready force than on 9/11. The Iraq exit and the “JV team” delay helped ISIS take territory. The Iran deal moved tens of billions toward the regime that bankrolls the proxies. Energy rules and pipeline cancellations raised costs while adversaries sold crude. The Afghanistan withdrawal handed the Taliban American weapons and a terrorist platform. Stimulus spending juiced inflation that stole purchasing power. Border reversals produced record encounters. None of it was required for American strength. All of it was useful to the other side. The AI play is the same habit aimed at the next decisive field — and timed for an election. The child-protection line is the fraud that sells it. In 2023 he told librarians they were on the “front lines” and called parental book challenges “profoundly misguided.” Graphic sexual material stayed on children’s shelves; the parent who objected was the problem. Now he wants Washington to police what AI a child can touch. Filters already exist. Households already say no. One standard when it keeps the state in charge of the shelf. Another when it lets the state pre-clear the machine and smear the incumbent’s prized project. That is not guardianship. It is control dressed up for November. This is not competitiveness. It is the latest instruction from a record that treated American power as expendable if the party needed a campaign issue. Stack it with the rest. Americans pay the cost. Adversaries collect the benefit. There was never a good reason for any of it.
