And it accidentally concedes the most dangerous part of the accusation.Because even if he had been 42, being Muslim would not have made him responsible for an attack carried out by someone else. His age is not the answer to this question. The answer is that the question itself is wrong.Mamdani is New York City's mayor. He has a record. He has policies. He has political associations and public statements that anyone is entitled to scrutinise, debate, and criticise.That is how democratic accountability works.But 9/11 is not a policy. It is a tragedy that killed nearly 3,000 people. And using it as a loyalty test that every Muslim public official must pass before being considered a legitimate participant in American democracy is not accountability. It is collective suspicion dressed in the language of patriotism.Mamdani designated September 11 as a Day of Remembrance and Service, honouring victims, survivors, and first responders while strengthening emergency preparedness.That is a mayor doing his job.The people demanding he prove his innocence regarding an attack he had nothing to do with are not asking about his governance. They are asking him to explain his religion. And they are using 9/11 as the mechanism to make that demand sound reasonable.It is not reasonable.A Muslim name in public office is not evidence of anything except that democracy sometimes works the way it is supposed to. If his policies are wrong, argue against them. If his record is weak, challenge it.
