Donald Trump may not have formally endorsed anyone for 2028, but his message from Dallas was unmistakable: JD Vance is being positioned as the heir apparent to the MAGA movement.
Trump gave Vance the convention’s prime speaking slot, immediately before his own closing appearance. He reportedly called Vance early the next morning to discuss their speeches, the midterms and what comes next. Then Vance walked onto that stage to chants of “JD” and “JD 28” receiving the kind of enthusiasm once reserved almost exclusively for Trump.
Vance is no longer merely the loyal vice president. He is becoming the movement’s messenger, defender and prospective successor. His assignment now is to help unify a Republican coalition divided over issues including Iran, while proving that Trump’s political movement can survive beyond Trump himself.
But an heir apparent is not yet an endorsed nominee. Marco Rubio and others remain part of the 2028 conversation, and Trump has not formally declared his successor. Still, political transitions are often communicated through staging, access and responsibility before they are announced with words.
In Dallas, Trump gave Vance all three. The signal was clear: if the MAGA torch is eventually passed, JD Vance is standing closest to receive it. AW

I think a Vance/Rubio ticket would go over well. When does Barron turn 35?
