Twenty-five years ago this Friday, the world watched something happen in real time that no one had words for yet.
At 8:46 a.m., an American Airlines Boeing 767 hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
For a few minutes, people wondered if it was a terrible accident. Seventeen minutes later, a second plane hit the South Tower — and any doubt disappeared. This was an attack.
By the end of that morning, both towers had collapsed.
Nearly 3,000 people were dead. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in American history.
Twenty-five years later, the photographs from that day still carry a weight that time hasn't worn down.
They don't get easier to look at.
If anything, the distance makes them heavier — because now we know everything that came after: the wars, the security lines, the names read aloud every anniversary, the empty space where two towers used to be.
An entire generation has grown up knowing September 11 only as history. A date in a textbook, not a memory.
But for millions of others, it's not history at all. It's the last ordinary morning before everything changed.
This Friday, the country pauses again to remember.
