Kathy Hochul is accusing President Trump of defunding the police because the federal government has not released roughly $87 million in counterterrorism funding that New York says supports NYPD intelligence analysts, bomb squads, FDNY specialized units, National Guard security, and local law enforcement. Trump did not eliminate the NYPD budget or shut down New York bomb squads. The fight is over federal homeland security money that New York expected to receive.New York State operates on a budget of roughly $250 billion, while New York City has a budget well above $100 billion. FEMA has also pushed back on Hochul’s claims, saying New York still has more than $300 million in previously awarded federal homeland security funding that has not yet been spent. Hochul argues that protecting New York from terrorism is also a federal responsibility and that Washington should provide the money it committed.There is also some political irony in Hochul repeatedly using the phrase defunding the police. Hochul herself has said she does not support the defund the police movement, although she has supported criminal justice reforms associated with progressive politics.
