I am having a really hard time understanding what we are watching with the Lindsay Clancy case.
Postpartum depression is real. Postpartum psychosis is real. Women can suffer horribly after giving birth, sometimes in ways the rest of us cannot fully understand. They deserve compassion, doctors who listen, families who recognize the warning signs, and treatment before things spiral out of control.
But come on.
Many, many women suffer postpartum depression. They battle anxiety, despair, intrusive thoughts and emotional darkness.
They do not kill their children.
Lindsay Clancy killed all three of hers.
Cora was 5. Dawson was 3. Callan was 8 months old.
She strangled them.
Yet somehow we now have supporters gathering around Clancy, making heart signs, wearing shirts for her and turning her into a martyr for postpartum mental health.
There is absolutely nothing to heroize here.
And these women are doing women a tremendous disservice in another way.
Think about the argument they are making.
If hormones after childbirth can supposedly make a woman murderous and unable to control herself, if TikTok fills up with women making light of “postpartum rage,” and if killing three children becomes something we are supposed to excuse because a woman simply could not help herself, where does that argument lead?
How do you then turn around and demand that nobody ever question whether a woman can handle the presidency, command the military, control nuclear weapons and make decisions involving war and peace?
You cannot have it both ways.
And I reject the premise completely.
Women are perfectly capable of controlling themselves, exercising judgment, accepting responsibility and leading this country.
That is exactly why turning Lindsay Clancy into some symbol of womanhood is insulting to women.
Was something terribly wrong with Clancy? Clearly.
Should we improve postpartum mental healthcare? Absolutely.
But three babies are dead.
The cause should be preventing another Cora, Dawson and Callan, not celebrating the woman who killed them.
