Nobody knows who made this wood engraving, only that its first known appearance was in the 1888 book _L'atmosphère : météorologie populaire _(‘The Atmosphere: Popular Meteorology’) by French astronomer Camille Flammarion. The illustration shows a pilgrim peeking through the firmament, the mythical solid vault of the sky that was thought to separate the earthly realm below from the heavens beyond.On the other side of the firmament, our hero sees a mysterious realm of clouds, fires, suns, and strange cosmic machinery. The caption tells us that this is a missionary of the Middle Ages who managed to find the point where Earth and the sky meet. If we ever manage to track this place down, we’ll arrange a visit for one of the Cloud Appreciation Society’s Sky Holidays.
