One year after Iryna Zarutska's shocking murder aboard a Charlotte light-rail train, her family is taking the city and its security contractor to court.
The wrongful-death lawsuit alleges "systemic failures" left the transit system vulnerable, pointing to alleged security staffing shortages, a lack of fare enforcement and no guard aboard Zarutska's train when she was fatally stabbed.
"Violent crime was absolutely foreseeable," the family's attorney says, arguing officials knew or should have known about previous criminal activity along the Blue Line.
