#vibrantdadTHE SCHOOL INTERCOM COULD TURN AN ENTIRE CLASSROOM SILENT BEFORE THE PRINCIPAL SAID A SINGLE NAME.First came the click. Then the crackle.Every pencil stopped moving. Every conversation ended. Even the teacher froze and looked toward that little metal speaker on the wall as if it had just interrupted with news from another planet.“Attention, teachers and students…”That was all it took.Within seconds, every kid in the room was mentally reviewing the past week. The homework that had not been finished. The hallway running nobody was supposed to see. The mysterious mark on the bathroom wall. The note passed during math. The kickball that somehow ended up on the school roof.Nobody knew why the principal was speaking, but everyone suddenly felt guilty about something. Then came the most terrifying words in education:“Would the following student please report to the office…”There was always a pause before the name.It lasted only a second, but it felt long enough to reconsider every decision you had made since kindergarten. Some kids stared straight ahead. Others looked around the room, silently predicting who was about to take the walk. One poor soul was already turning pale. Then the name came.If it wasn’t yours, the relief was immediate. Your shoulders dropped. Your pencil started moving again. Life had given you another chance. If it was yours, the entire class watched as you stood up, pushed in your chair, and began the longest walk in the world.Maybe you were in trouble. Maybe your mother had arrived early. Maybe someone had dropped off your forgotten lunch. It didn’t matter. The intercom had called your name, and until you reached that office, every possible disaster felt equally likely.
