That is the size of the payment now at the center of a year-long federal grand jury investigation that Trump's Justice Department opened into the daughter of the judge who convicted him.As reported by the New York Times, here is how the case got that small. In May 2024, a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts in the hush money case overseen by Judge Juan Merchan. Last August, his Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into Authentic Campaigns, a Democratic fundraising firm that Merchan's daughter Loren had co-owned. It grew out of a criminal referral from Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee.The grand jury subpoena, run by Chicago U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros, is the part that gives away the game.It never named a crime. What it did name was a client list that reads like a Democratic Party directory: Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Governor Kathy Hochul, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the DNC. The subpoena demanded the firm's private communications with all of them.They couldn't find anything.So the sweeping demand for the internal emails of the last two Democratic presidential nominees narrowed down to this: one $468 payment from the Harris campaign, and the emails between a daughter and her father.The $468 was for hosting a website. That's it. No charges have been filed. The Times reports no follow-up subpoenas have gone to Loren Merchan or anyone else, and where the investigation stands is unclear.
