This photograph was taken near Blackpool’s South Pier and shows the Goodyear airship in the sky, with several unmistakable linear aircraft contrails visible in the background.You can actually verify the time period yourself.. A contemporary report published in Motor Sport in June 1973 announced the UK itinerary of the Goodyear airship Europa. It specifically stated that on Monday 2 July 1973 the airship would fly via Manchester, Liverpool and Southport to Blackpool, where it would be based before departing south on 4 July. Other surviving Blackpool photographs are also independently captioned as showing the Goodyear airship over the town in July 1973. So we have the location, the distinctive airship and a period report placing that airship over Blackpool at precisely the time this photograph is said to have been taken.And floating quietly in the background? PERSISTENT CONTRAILS In 1973.Not particularly surprising either. Historical material notes that contrails became widely observed during World War II, when aircraft routinely began operating above roughly 25,000ft in conditions favourable for their formation. Atmospheric scientists were literally investigating contrail produced cirrus during WWII. So when somebody tells you:“We NEVER saw these until the 1990s/2000s!”What they actually mean is:“I personally don’t remember noticing them.”Those are not remotely the same thing… and don’t let anyone tell you any different.
